Submit a domain name to retrieve registration metadata that registries and registrars publish: create and expiry dates, sponsoring registrar, status codes (clientTransferProhibited, redemptionPeriod, etc.), and nameserver delegation in many cases. Post-GDPR and other privacy programs, contact fields for natural persons are often redacted and replaced with privacy service emails. Treat WHOIS as authoritative for lifecycle timing but incomplete for personal identity unless you have lawful disclosure channels.

Why is Registrant email hidden?
ICANN and local law encourage minimization. Some TLDs still show org contacts. If you need legal service, use approved disclosure processes, not guesswork from old cached WHOIS.
Is WHOIS the same as DNS?
No. WHOIS is registration business data. DNS is live resolution. They should align on nameservers but can diverge during attacks or partial updates.
What do status codes mean?
clientHold and serverHold often mean the name will not resolve at all. Redemption is a last-chance window after expiry. Your registrar help pages define each EPP state.
How often should I re-check?
