Modern manifests
PWAs and Android shortcuts increasingly consume WebP maskable icons. Starting from the ICO bundle gives you the canonical bitmap colors—just remember designers often ship multiple densities; pick the largest embedded size before encoding.
Testing
Maskable icons need padding—WebP will not fix unsafe cropping. Compare against WEBP to ICO when validating round trips.
